Why You’ll Love This Recipe

This is no regular Whole30 ketchup recipe!

No, this is the Whole30 ketchup of hope. Of Promise.

This Whole30 ketchup recipe means bang bang shrimp and In N Out animal style-inspired burgers and meatloaf. This Whole30 ketchup recipe makes all of those other recipes possible.

And you know what else about this Whole30 ketchup recipe? No dates, sister. No dates, no blending, nada. In fact, I’m sort of anti-dates in a Whole30. For me, they’re total candy, and I found myself noshing on them in the early days of my last round, clearly just staving off that sugar dragon in the laziest of ways. Oh, and speaking of lazy? I’m anti-dates in a sauce because, lazy. Dates in sauces mean blending, more dishes, more hand-washing (uh, dates are sticky), more just more.

So this Whole30 ketchup recipe is sweetened a different way — my favorite way, in fact! With the almighty coconut aminos.

The thing about coconut aminos is that they’re sweet! They’re sort of salty, but not very. I never entirely replace salt with coconut aminos, but I absolutely love using them to give a recipe a natural sweetness and depth of flavor.

And they’re absolutely perfect in this Whole30 ketchup recipe. It works like this: stir some stuff together, let it simmer, and… you’re done. Easy, easy, easy.

What Makes This Recipe So Good

  • It tastes just like “regular” ketchup but is free of added sugars and Whole30 compliant.
  • This Whole30 ketchup recipe includes no dates, meaning no blending!
  • It comes together super easily and keeps in the fridge for a long time.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Can you eat ketchup on Whole30?

Yes! And also no. You can have compliant ketchup, like this ketchup recipe, or a store-bought version like Tessemae’s. If your ketchup has any type of sugar listed in the ingredients, it’s not compliant. You can check out my Whole30 food list here to make sure you’re avoiding even the sneakiest of sugars!

Which coconut aminos should I buy?

My very favorite coconut aminos are from Big Tree Farms. They’re affordable and super delicious, thick, and rich. I have a bottle in the fridge at all times and a bottle in the pantry as a backup. I don’t play around with coconut aminos, y’all. They’re key in my Whole30 egg roll in a bowl recipe and my Whole30 lettuce wraps, too.

Can I skip the coconut aminos?

No! Please don’t. The coconut aminos give this ketchup its sweetness and richness, and you’d be missing a lot of both without it.

    1. This is the best ketchup! It’s not overly sweet. Even my non whole30 family likes it! Thanks for posting.5 stars

    2. This was one of the first sauces I made when I started whole 30 in 2018. I make it all the time and continue make it even when I am not strictly whole 30.5 stars

    3. I wasn’t sure about the coconut aminos, but I just made it, and the flavor is spot on! Great ketchup, and I was so happy to use the last of my garden tomatoes to make it.5 stars

    4. Hi Cheryl!

Can this recipe be frozen after cooking? I’m in the Uk and we only have 500gm jars of tomato sauce here so it would be a double recipe. Any help would be great!

      Thanks 🙂

      1. Hi Shannon! Thanks for this great question. (And for reading all the way from the UK!) Yes, you can freeze this homemade ketchup recipe, and it should last for a very long time — potentially up to 6 months or even longer. Since it’s a tomato-based product, ketchup will freeze very well, even at extremely cold temperatures. You can freeze ketchup in its original sealed bottle, an airtight container, or in an ice cube tray. It may become watered down in the thawing process, so you could reheat on the stove to evaporate some of that excess water. Hope this helps!5 stars

      1. We strongly suggest the coco aminos in this recipe for the additional flavor! Let us know what you think without that ingredient. 🙂5 stars

    5. Hi there, I’d love to try this recipe but I don’t have coconut aminos (and can’t bring myself to pay the high price tag for it). Can I substitute soy sauce (or tamari sauce)? I know that’s not Whole30-compliant, but I’m looking for a sugar-free ketchup recipe, rather than a soy-free one.

        1. Awesome! Thanks so much for responding. I bought a new bottle of apple cider vinegar in the grocery a couple hours ago just for this. I haven’t had ketchup in so long so I’m excited! I’ll let you know how it turns out 🙂

    6. Cheryl, this is amazing! I like it better than ketchup. I kept taste-testing it as I added ingredients and each time it tasted better. After adding the allspice which really made it taste better than ketchup, I said what the heck I have a few things I like to add to chili that might make it even better. I added a touch of cinnamon, just a touch, because I didn’t want to really notice the cinnamon. Yum! Then I added about a 1/4 t of cocoa powder. It’s amazing how the small additions of these three items really changed the flavor. I will always make my own ketchup.5 stars

    7. This is my go-to recipe every time I do a Whole30 – and even when I’m not! Thanks so much for creating a tastey healthier ketchup sans dates, because #lazy lol.
