Who doesn’t love chocolate magic shell on their ice cream? With only two ingredients, this keto magic shell is super easy to make and the perfect treat over keto ice cream when you’re on a low carb diet. Deliciously chocolatey and with a perfect crunch, we have a bowl of this in our fridge at all times!

🍨 What Makes This Recipe So Good

  • All of the fudgy, chocolatey, magical goodness you love about a magic shell ice cream topping, without all of the sugar! This homemade keto magic shell only needs 2 ingredients and it comes together in just a few minutes. Pour it over a scoop of keto ice cream and watch it harden just like the “real” thing… then crack in and enjoy!
  • This keto magic shell has 14g of total carbs per serving, but because that’s mostly fiber, there’s only 3g of net carbs. Compare that to the original, which clocks in at 18g of total carbs and 17g of net carbs – with 16 of those being just sugar.
  • You can make different flavors of magic shell really easily just by swapping out the chocolate chips! To mimic the OG magic shell, I prefer to use Lily’s milk chocolate chips, but dark chocolate would work just as well. For a copycat of the unicorn magic shell, use keto white chocolate chips and keto sprinkles. To remake the Reese’s shell, try using 4.5 ounces of milk chocolate chips and 4.5 ounces of peanut butter chips – all keto, of course.

👩🏼‍🍳 Chef’s Tips

  • Sugar-free chocolate can burn really easily, so you want to be careful when you’re heating it up. Lower the power on your microwave to 50%, and don’t microwave the chocolate for more than 30 seconds at a time. Honestly, you could play it really safe if you want only go for 15 seconds – it’s up to you. Stir everything well after each burst in the microwave, and stop the process once the chocolate chips are almost completely melted. At that point, stirring should allow the residual heat to finish melting any chocolate chips that are left.
  • Use refined coconut oil! It has a much more subtle flavor than unrefined coconut oil, meaning you won’t end up with a chocolate shell that tastes like coconut.
  • To get different flavors in your keto magic shell without changing the chocolate you use, you can add a little bit of your favorite extract to the melted mixture. Peppermint, almond, vanilla, orange, lime, strawberry, banana… the options are endless! Just don’t overdo it – you don’t want to throw off the flavor or consistency of the chocolate sauce.
  • Keto magic shell will also work on popsicles, fruit, or even keto ice cream cones. For fruit, I really love dipping banana slices in the magic shell mixture and then freezing them for a quick grab-and-go frozen treat later on. • Sugar-free chocolate can burn easily, so don’t overdo it in the microwave. Stir it frequently and microwave in short bursts.
  • Chocolate Chips: I prefer Lily’s or ChocZero milk chocolate chips for this recipe, but dark chocolate would work well, too.
  • Make it Dairy Free: Use dairy-free chocolate chips.
  • Make it Vegan: Use vegan chocolate chips.
  • Leftovers: Refrigerate leftover magic shell in an airtight container up to 2 weeks. To reheat, repeat original process, stirring well between each 30-second burst in the microwave.
