These black bean brownies the BEST black bean brownies you’ll ever have – or maybe the best brownies! They’re so fudgy and rich, no one would guess they have black beans in them! Made with coconut sugar and a little coconut flour, they’re healthy, full of fiber, and gluten free.
Why These Brownies Are So Good
- These are the most decadent, rich, moist, fudgy brownies you will ever eat! If you love my paleo brownies, you are going to go crazy for these.
- We perfected this recipe until the texture and taste was just right (not kidding, we made 3 batches), and we are obsessed with them. You would never know they are made with beans!
- Since these brownies are made with black beans and healthy ingredients, these are an indulgent treat that you can feel good about eating (and sharing, if you can resist the urge to eat them all).
How To Make Them
- Preheat the oven to 350º F. In a bowl, mix the avocado oil and 1/2 cup of the chocolate chips. Melt in the microwave by heating for 30 seconds, stirring, and then repeating. If not completely melted, continue heating at 30 second intervals.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the eggs and sugar until well combined.
- Process everything other than the two mixtures above in a food processor until a doughy consistency.
- Place the above dough in a large bowl and mix in the chocolate chip mixture. Add in the egg mixture, folding in gently. Then fold in the rest of the chocolate chips
- Grease a square pan (either 8×8 or 9×9 is preferable) and line with parchment paper. Pour in the batter and bake for 40 minutes (checking at 30 and 35 minutes). The top should be nice and crackly when they are done (see notes for toothpick instruction). Allow them to cool before cutting and eating!
Chef’s Tips
- The brownies are ready when you stick a toothpick in them and it comes out mostly clean, but not entirely. It should have a few crumbs on it, but not be completely coated!
- We highly recommend using brewed coffee in your brownies, but you can substitute it with water if you prefer.

Can I use coconut oil
Hi, Mary! You can definitely use coconut oil (refined coconut oil would work best!). Let us know if you try them. 🙂
Turned out great! This recipe is a keeper.
I’m glad you enjoyed it!
What does the coffee do? Is it for taste?
It is!
Cheryl,
I’ve followed you for a bit now so I could try some different food bloggers.
I’m very happy to say, we love the brownies!! My body requires a lot of protein so I substituted Chick Pea flour for all of the Coconut flour.
Don’t why I didn’t think about it before but some I wished I’d replaced the coconut sugar for either date paste or date syrup as I’m not a big fan of Coconut flour.
Perfect recipe! I was looking for a very specific black bean brownie recipe that also used coconut flour and you nailed it with this recipe Cheryl! Thank you so much for posting it.
Can I use regular all purpose flour instead? I have everything at home but the coconut flour..
What would be a good substitute for the avo oil? Coconut oil? Thanks!
Yes! I would personally use a refined coconut oil, but that would absolutely work
I use avocado oil in ALL my baking. Avocados are fantastic for brain health and it’s a very neutral oil.
