Valentine’s for the kiddos doesn’t have to be “Mom cooks, children eat hamburgers and fries in the other room.” Instead, give them their own Fancy Kids Valentine’s Dinnerโ€”either the night before or earlier in the eveningโ€”and suddenly everyone feels included without anyone melting down before bedtime.

For all the holidays at my house, yes, even Valentine’s Day, I always include my 3 kids. It’s important to me that they feel part of every event. And let’s be honest, it’s acknowledged at school, so those celebrations should be spread around the whole day!

I lay out what a special dinner for kids can look like, with easy and delicious foods that they’ll gobble up while feelin’ fancy!

Valentine's Day menu template with bow decoration listing fancy kids dinner courses including amuse bouche, appetizer, main course options, and dessert

The Setup

  • Print a simple menu as shown above (even handwritten worksโ€”use this Canva template or adapt it to your dishes)
  • Add cute and fancy cloth napkins, battery candles, sparkling juice in real glasses
  • Plating that makes them squeal

The Menu

Amuse-Bouche: Goldfish “Caviar” Bite

A playful, absurdly fancy moment using Goldfish crackers. This is the Michelin-star wink that sets the tone.

What it is: A tiny spoon with 2โ€“3 Goldfish crackers, a micro-dollop of cream cheese or ranch dip, a halved cherry tomato or mini cucumber cube, and an optional basil micro-leaf or chive ring.

How to plate it: Use a silver tasting spoon or mini porcelain spoon. Add a tiny smear of ranch, prop 2 Goldfish upright into the smear, add one perfect cube of cucumber or tiny tomato half, and finish with a micro-leaf. Set all spoons on a rectangular white platter with 1โ€“2 sprinkled Goldfish crumbs for drama.

Vibe: Looks like a chef’s ironic take on “seafood” for kids. So fun.

Appetizer: Valentine Crudites

A tiny, elegant vegetable moment that feels like a cocktail hour.

What it is: A shot glass or cordial glass with ยฝ inch of ranch, one very thin celery curl, one trimmed carrot baton, and one slim breadstick or pretzel rod.

How to plate it: Use clear shot glasses so the ranch looks intentional. Place veggies asymmetrically to mimic craft cocktails. Drag a razor-thin line of ranch (use a squeeze bottle) along the plate beside the glass. Add one micro-piece of dill on top of the ranch line.

Vibe: Looks like a cocktail party appetizer at a fancy restaurant. Kids love the novelty of eating from a “grown-up” glass, and it makes vegetables feel like an event instead of a chore.

Main Entree Idea 1: Buttered Farfalle (Heart-Shaped Pasta)

A simple pasta dish elevated through intentional plating. This is where you show kids that presentation mattersโ€”and get 10 points for it (it’s pictured above).

What it is: Bow tie pasta tossed in butter, molded into a heart shape using a heart-shaped cookie cutter, then buried under a mound of freshly grated Parmesan “snow.” Leave the cookie cutter on the plate so the heart holds its shape.

How to plate it: Cook bow tie pasta and toss with melted butter. While still warm, pack pasta tightly into a heart-shaped cookie cutter placed on the plate. Press down firmly. Carefully lift the cutter (or leave it for drama). Cover the entire heart with a generous mound of freshly grated Parmesanโ€”it should look like a snowy mountain. Add one tiny micro-green or clover leaf on top for color.

Vibe: Adorable, whimsical, and surprisingly elegant. The heart shape does all the heavy lifting.

Main Entree Idea 2: Crisped Chicken Medallions (Chicken Nuggets & Waffle Fries)

Everyone’s favorite kid meal gets the restaurant treatment with a ketchup brushstroke and creative plating.

What it is: Chicken nuggets arranged like dominoes over a ketchup brushstroke, waffle fries stacked into a creative pile, plus a small cube of cheese with a celery curl for an upscale garnish.

How to plate it: Use a spoon to create a wide brushstroke of ketchup across one side of the plate. Lay chicken nuggets in a row on top of the ketchup, slightly overlapping like dominoes. Stack waffle fries into a small architectural pile on the other side. Add one small cube of cheese with a thin celery curl draped over it. The contrasting textures and careful arrangement make it look chef-level.

Vibe: Basic meal elevated through plating. Takes three extra minutes but suddenly chicken nuggets feel like fine dining.

Dessert: Sweetheart Ice Cream Service

The one dish that needs no fancy tricksโ€”a classic sundae already looks restaurant-quality and delivers pure joy every time.

What it is: A decadent ice cream sundae served in a waffle bowl. Chocolate ice cream with a drizzle of chocolate syrup, a generous swirl of whipped cream, rainbow sprinkles, and a maraschino cherry on top.

How to plate it: Use a crispy waffle bowl as the base. Add 2โ€“3 scoops of chocolate ice cream. Drizzle with chocolate syrup in a zigzag pattern. Pipe a large rosette of whipped cream on top. Cover with rainbow sprinkles. Finish with one perfect maraschino cherry in the center of the whipped cream.

Vibe: Pure joy in a bowl. Classic ice cream parlor vibes that make kids feel like they’re at a real dessert bar.

The ultimate aim is for kids to enjoy the fun while parents still have a grown-up dinner later. No one is crying. Everyone remembers it. And you’re teaching them that special moments don’t require a reservation or a big budgetโ€”just a little intention and creativity!

Prep Schedule: Get Ahead So Dinner Night Feels Easy

The secret to pulling off a fancy kids’ dinner without losing your mind? Do most of the work ahead of time. That way, when it’s go-time, you’re just assembling and platingโ€”not cooking and stressing. Here’s how to make it happen, lovelies!

Day Before

  • Prep vegetables for Mini Veggie Ranch Shooter (wash and cut celery and carrots, store in water in fridge)
  • Shop for all ingredients, including any special items (tasting spoons, heart-shaped bowls, edible flowers if using)

Day Of โ€“ Morning

  • Set aside table dรฉcor: cloth napkins, battery candles, fancy plates, shot glasses or cordial glasses for shooters, tasting spoons
  • Print menus (use this Canva template or handwrite them)
  • Prep any Valentine’s gifts or surprises to place at their seats

Day Of โ€“ Afternoon

  • Set the table with fancy plates, cloth napkins, menus, and battery candles
  • Pour sparkling juice into real glasses
  • If doing Valentine’s Board for Kids: arrange all cold components on the board

Day Of โ€“ About 30 Minutes Before Serving

  • Assemble Goldfish “Caviar” Bites on tasting spoons, cover and refrigerate
  • Assemble Valentine Crudites in shot glasses, add ranch drizzle to plates, refrigerate
  • Start cooking main course components (cook bow tie pasta and toss with butter OR reheat chicken nuggets and cook waffle fries)
  • Prep ice cream sundae components: set out waffle bowls, scoop ice cream into bowls, top with chocolate syrup, whipped cream, sprinkles, and cherry, return to freezer until serving

Serving Time

  • Light battery candles
  • Serve courses one at a time: Amuse-Bouche first, then Appetizer, Main Course, and finally Dessert
  • Let them enjoy each course before clearing and moving to the next
  • The whole dinner takes about 45 minutes from start to finish

Give it a try this Valentine’s Day and let us know in the comments how your kids enjoyed their fancy finnerโ€”we want to hear if they ate the basil leaf or asked for seconds on those veggie shooters!
