Mother’s Day is the one holiday that somehow ends up back on mom’s plate, and guess what? We’re fixing that. If youโre a dad who wants to actually get it right this year or a mom trying to figure out how to just enjoy the day for once, this guide has everything you need: a real plan, easy breakfast ideas the kids can actually make, and gift ideas that donโt feel like an afterthought.

Easy Breezy Menu: Spoil Mom with Nourishing, Simple Food
Here’s a hot take: the best Mother’s Day dinner isn’t the most elaborate one โ it’s the one mom didn’t have to think about at all. A genuinely delicious, nourishing meal made by the people she loves hits different than any restaurant reservation ever could. The goal here isn’t perfection. The goal is for her to sit down, have a plate put in front of her, and not lift a finger from start to finish.
These recipes are specifically chosen because they’re simple enough for dads to actually pull off. Most of the prep can happen while she’s relaxing, the ingredients are straightforward, and nothing here requires culinary school. What it does require is a little effort and a lot of love โ which, honestly, is the whole point.
The Menu

Salad: Burrata Caprese
This comes together in literally 10 minutes! Creamy, cloud-like burrata is nestled into juicy ripe tomatoes, scattered with fresh basil, drizzled with good olive oil and balsamic glaze, and finished with flaky salt โ itโs stunning, itโs elegant, and sheโll looove it!

Appetizer: Ricotta Lemon Honey Dip
Mom will enjoy this rich, creamy dip, and it only takes 5 minutes to put it together. Whipped ricotta gets brightened with fresh lemon zest, drizzled with golden honey, and finished with a pinch of flaky salt and a glug of good olive oil. Serve it with toasted baguette slices, crostinis, or seedy crackers.

Cocktail: Lavender Lemonade Cocktail
I confess I adore cocktails, so maybe this is sneaking in something Iโd drink! Fresh lemon juice, homemade lavender simple syrup, and her favorite vodka are shaken until poured into a highball glass and served over ice. So refreshing, and takes mere minutes to mix up!

Side Dish: Crockpot Scalloped Potatoes
A total โset it and forget itโ dish, thatโs seriously easy to execute. Just layer Yukon gold potatoes and then smother in a silky, from-scratch cheese sauce made with sharp cheddar or gruyere and parmesan, turn on the slow cooker, and walk away. But come back to make sure itโs done!

Main Dish: Crab-Stuffed Salmon with Lemon Butter Sauce
So, this one does take a bit of planning, but itโs doable, and salmon cooks fast! Salmon fillets are loaded with a creamy, seasoned lump crab filling and finished with a silky, bright lemon butter drizzle that ties the whole thing together. A helpful tip: โโmake the crab filling the night before and refrigerate it. This is the most time-consuming part, and doing it ahead means the day of cooking is more stress-free.
Why These Recipes for Motherโs Day Are Solid
This menu was built for anyone to pull off, no problem. The burrata and ricotta dip are pure assembly โ no cooking, just arranging beautifully. The scalloped potatoes go into the crockpot and essentially take care of themselves. The lavender lemonade cocktail shakes together in minutes. That leaves the salmon as the one dish that needs real attention, and even that becomes manageable when the crab filling is made the night before.
I guarantee the hubs can land this one!
More Motherโs Day Food Ideas: Easy to Do, Part 2
Want to add a little something extra to the spread? There are so many more recipes that are totally dad-friendly and genuinely delicious. Hereโs more inspiration to make the table feel even more special for her.

Salad: Strawberry Goat Cheese Salad
For this one, I feel like the kids could help out. Itโs a simple mix of crisp lettuce, sweet strawberries, tangy goat cheese crumbles, crunchy praline pecans, and fresh basil. Then itโs all topped off with the most delicious balsamic vinaigrette.

Cocktail: Blueberry Mojitos (Single or Pitcher)
Going back to my love of cocktails, serve her up some of these. Theyโre the perfect blend of fruity, minty, and sweet, and making a pitcher is super easy. Or you can go for a single one, hereโs the recipe for that.

Side Dish: Instant Pot Risotto Parmesan and White Wine
Another simple one to set and let IP do its magic. Load it up with parmesan cheese and a touch of white wine, and itโs good to go!

Main Dish 1: Pan-Seared Chicken Thighs with White Wine Sauce
This foolproof recipe is quick and meant to impress! Juicy bone-in chicken thighs are seared until crispy and then oven-roasted and finished with a rich white wine pan sauce.

Main Dish 2: Pan-Seared Salmon with a Red Pepper Sauce
Soo creamy and quick to do, salmon fillets are pan-seared and smothered in a rich, creamy parmesan roasted red pepper sauce. I make this for my family often, and now the husbands can return the favor on Motherโs Day!
To end off, I have a couple of bonus suggestions: this stuffed salmon is savory and filled with delicious cream cheese and parmasean, while a good classic is this Instant Pot chicken risotto (kind of like 2 meals in one!).

Motherโs Day Breakfast: Get the Kids Involved
Breakfast in bed is one of those Mother’s Day moments that kids absolutely love being part of โ and honestly, it’s one of the sweetest gifts she’ll receive all day. Whether you keep it simple with something they can mostly assemble themselves or you guide them through something a little more special, here are some easy, kid-friendly breakfast ideas that will make mom feel totally, completely spoiled!

Overnight Brioche French Toast Casserole
A make-ahead French toast casserole is the way to go, because the hub and kids can assemble it the night before and pop it into the oven in the AM. And this one is sooo mom-approved! Thick brioche cubes soak overnight in a rich cinnamon custard, then bake under a crunchy brown sugar streusel until golden!

Sausage and Hasthbrown Casserole
Moms love hearty breakfasts, too, and this casserole can also be made ahead. Get the kids in on laying out the sausage or hash browns, and then cover tightly with plastic wrap or foil, and refrigerate overnight. In the morning, let it sit at room temperature while the oven preheats, pop it in, and voila! Mom is sipping a mimosa and nibbling on this.

Chocolate Chip Pancakes
The husband or partner can always hit the classic notes and make these fluffy, chocolate-y pancakes. The kids can mix the batter while Dad flips them. These are really a fun teamwork activity!
These are easy, fun, and decadent breakfasts that let the kids participate in the preparation, and they all look lovely on a tray delivered to mom in bed!
How to Actually Plan Mother’s Day (A Guide for Partners)
Okay, partners โ this section is yours. And I say this with love: “what do you want to do?” is NOT a plan. Open-ended questions on the morning of a holiday feel great in theory and create chaos in practice. What she needs is for you to have already figured it out.
Here’s a flow of how it works to pull off a successful Mother’s Day:

Step 1: Decide what kind of day she wants โ before the day
Have this conversation a week out, not the morning of. Ask her to choose between two options at a time, so she’s not building the plan from scratch:
Relax at home vs. go somewhere?
Alone time vs. together time?
Breakfast in bed vs. brunch out?
Spa day vs. leisurely morning with coffee and a book?
Two options. She picks. You execute. That’s it.
Step 2: Take full ownership of the day
Once you know what she wants, build the plan yourself. Make the reservation. Order the groceries. Brief the kids. Wrap the gift. Set the alarm. She should wake up on Mother’s Day with zero open items on her mental to-do list โ not because you asked her to clear it, but because you already did.
Step 3: Remove her from the equation entirely
Take the kids out of the house, even if just for a few hours. Handle whatever errands have been sitting on the list. Don’t text her to ask where things are. Don’t call to check in. Give her the gift of being genuinely, completely unreachable from the responsibilities of her own life โ even temporarily.
“Don’t take the kids somewhere fun. Take them somewhere useful.”
A long playground run, a trip to the hardware store, a drive that conveniently aligns with nap time โ whatever gets her an hour or two of actual quiet at home is worth its weight in gold!!
Step 4: Offer to help with her mother
Okay partners, listen up โ here’s a move that will genuinely mean the world to her: volunteer to handle her mom’s gift. Pick out the card, coordinate the visit, make the reservation, wrap the present. She has been quietly running that mental checklist for weeks, and the fact that you took it off her plate without being asked? Trust me here โ that’s the gift. That’s the thing she’ll still be talking about in July.
Remember This!
How to Choose a Gift She’ll Actually Love
Let’s be honest about something: a bad gift is worse than no gift. A vacuum, a cleaning caddy, anything that suggests her gift is more housework โ that’s a hard no. The generic drugstore spa kit that’s been sitting on an end cap since February? She’s going to smile and say thank you and feel a little bit unseen. And definitely nix any heart-shaped jewelry, which is soooo cliche. You can do better.
In fact, weโe gone ahead and created a quick self-quiz to fire up some ideas for all you partners!

Before you and the kids buy her anything, it’s helpful to know where she’s at these days.
What’s she been talking about wanting lately?
What does she reach for every single day?
What’s something she used to do or enjoy, but hasn’t picked up again?
If you answer those questions honestly, the right gift is usually pretty obvious. And if you’re still stuck, here’s a simple rule: give her something that upgrades her everyday life, or gives her an experience she wouldn’t carve out for herself. Thoughtful beats expensive every time.

If You’re Both a Mom AND a Daughter
This one’s for the moms who are also daughters, and honestly, this situation deserves its own conversation because it is genuinely hard.

You want to celebrate your own mother โ you love her, she deserves it โ but you’re also a mom yourself, and you deserve to be celebrated too. And somehow the expectation is that you’ll split yourself perfectly down the middle and make everyone happy, and that is a lot to ask of one person on what is supposed to be your day.
Here’s the permission you didn’t know you needed: you don’t have to do both. You can absolutely honor your mom while also protecting your own morning, your own brunch, your own quiet hour. Clear communication goes a long way here โ let your family know early what you actually want the day to look like, so nobody’s feelings get hurt, and nobody’s expectations go unmet. A simple “I’d love to do dinner with you on Saturday” can make your actual Mother’s Day feel like yours.
You’re allowed to want something for yourself. That’s not selfish. That’s the whole point.
I really went all out for this Ultimate Mother’s Day Guide. Could be selfish, since I am a mother, and want the best for all mothers! Husbands and partners, I truly hope these tips and recipes help with your planning. Let me know in the comments how the whole day panned out!
