Cheryl’s Note

Okay, itโ€™s game day, so you need something thatโ€™s fast. Well, this dip is it. I call it the Best Potato Chip Dip Ever! Dips are so consistently easy to do and have people coming back to the snack table again and again!

Some of my other fave dips for Super Bowl parties are:

Why This Recipe is So Good

  • You literally cannot mess this up โ€“ seriously, this is a stir-and-serve situation that takes 5 minutes from start to finish. No cooking, no heating, no stress. Just dump everything in a bowl, mix it up, and you’ve got a dip that’ll have everyone asking for the recipe.
  • That combination of tangy sour cream with aromatic herbs and savory onion creates this addictive, restaurant-quality taste that keeps people coming back to the chip bowl. It’s got that fresh, herbaceous kick that makes vegetables actually exciting and turns basic tortilla chips into something you can’t stop eating.
  • Serve it with chips, veggies, wings, or use it as a spread for sandwiches and wraps. It works for fancy dinner parties, casual game day gatherings, family BBQs, and everything in between. Plus, you can easily customize the herbs based on what you have or what your crowd loves.

What You Need to Know Before You Start

  • While you can serve this immediately, letting it chill in the fridge for at least 2 hours (or overnight) transforms it from good to incredible. The dried onion flakes rehydrate and soften, the herbs infuse into the sour cream, and everything just comes together beautifully. If you’re crunched for time, even 30 minutes in the fridge helps.
  • While you can use all dried herbs in a pinch (use 1 teaspoon total dried herbs), fresh herbs bring this bright, vibrant quality that makes the dip taste restaurant-quality. Dill and chives are my go-to combo for that classic ranch-adjacent flavor everyone loves, while parsley adds freshness. Secret tip: cilantro works beautifully if you’re serving it with Mexican-inspired foods.
  • Adjust the consistency to match your serving style. If you’re using this as a veggie dip or chip dip, keep it thick as written. If you want it as a drizzle for tacos, wings, or salads, thin it out with 1 to 2 tablespoons of milk or buttermilk until it reaches your desired consistency. For a sauce that’s perfect for drizzling over grilled chicken or fish, aim for something that flows but still coats the back of a spoon.

Recipe Variations

Make it a Ranch-Style Dip: Add ยฝ teaspoon dried dill weed, ยผ teaspoon onion powder (in addition to the dried onion flakes), and a pinch of black pepper. This gives you that classic ranch flavor everyone loves.

Go Mediterranean: Use fresh dill and parsley for the herbs, add ยฝ teaspoon lemon zest, and fold in 2 tablespoons crumbled feta cheese. Perfect for serving with pita chips or as a spread for gyros.

Spicy Version: Stir in ยผ teaspoon cayenne pepper, ยฝ teaspoon smoked paprika, or 1 tablespoon finely minced jalapeรฑo for a dip with some heat. This version is SO amazing with buffalo wings.

French Onion Style: Double the dried onion flakes to 2 tablespoons, add ยฝ teaspoon Worcestershire sauce, and use chives as your fresh herb. Serve with kettle-cooked chips for that classic French onion dip experience.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use Greek yogurt instead of sour cream?

Greek yogurt works great and gives you a similar tangy flavor with extra protein. Use full-fat Greek yogurt for the best texture and richest flavor. You can also do half sour cream and half Greek yogurt for a nice balance.

How far in advance can I make this?

You can make this up to 3 days ahead, but it’s actually best made 1 day before serving. The flavors continue to develop as it sits, and day two is often the perfect sweet spot. After 3 days, the herbs can start to brown and the texture can thin out a bit.

What’s the best way to serve this at a party?

Keep it chilled in a serving bowl nestled in a larger bowl filled with ice, or serve it in a hollowed-out bread bowl for a fun presentation. Surround it with fresh-cut vegetables, kettle chips, pita chips, or crackers. For game day, set it out with wings or use it as a topping for loaded nachos.

Can I use all dried herbs instead of fresh?

You can, but the flavor won’t be quite as bright and fresh. If you’re using all dried herbs, use only 1 teaspoon total (dried herbs are more concentrated than fresh). Let the dip sit for at least 4 hours or overnight so the dried herbs have time to rehydrate and release their flavors.

How do I thin this out to use as a salad dressing (if I wanted to)?

Add milk, buttermilk, or water 1 tablespoon at a time, stirring well between additions, until it reaches your desired consistency. For salad dressing, you’ll want it thin enough to drizzle but thick enough to coat the lettuce โ€“ usually about 2 to 3 tablespoons of liquid will do the trick.

Equipment

  • medium mixing bowl
  • Measuring cups
  • measuring spoons
  • Spoon or small whisk for stirring
  • chef's knife
  • Cutting board

Ingredients

  • 1 cup full-fat sour cream
  • 1 tablespoon dried onion flakes
  • ยฝ teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh herbs of choice chives, parsley, dill, etc.
  • ยผ teaspoon salt more or less to taste

Instructions

  • Add 1 cup full-fat sour cream to a medium mixing bowl. Add 1 tablespoon dried onion flakes, ยฝ teaspoon garlic powder, 1 tablespoon chopped fresh herbs, and ยผ teaspoon salt to the bowl.
  • Use a spoon or small whisk to stir everything together until the herbs and seasonings are evenly distributed throughout the 1 cup sour cream. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap or transfer the dip to an airtight container. Refrigerate for at least 2 hours (overnight is even better) to allow the flavors to develop.
  • Before serving, taste the dip and adjust the seasoning if needed. Add more salt from the ยผ teaspoon measurement if it needs it, or add extra herbs for more punch. Serve cold with your choice of chips, fresh vegetables, chicken wings, or use as a spread.
Make it Dairy-Free: Substitute the sour cream with cashew cream or coconut-based sour cream for a dairy-free version that’s still rich and creamy.
Make it ahead: This dip is perfect for make-ahead entertaining. Prepare up to 3 days in advance and refrigerate until ready to serve. If it thickens too much in the fridge, stir in 1 to 2 teaspoons of milk to loosen it up.
Consistency Adjustments: For a thicker dip, let it chill for several hours so the dried onion flakes absorb more moisture. For a thinner sauce or dressing, stir in milk or buttermilk 1 tablespoon at a time until you reach your desired consistency.
Fresh vs. Dried Herbs: While fresh herbs give the brightest flavor, you can substitute with 1 teaspoon dried herbs total if needed. Let the dip chill for at least 4 hours to allow dried herbs to rehydrate fully.
Storage: Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. The flavor actually improves as it sits, so day two is often even better than day one.
