I’ve always been in love with vintage glamour. Is this because I perhaps look more like Ingrid Bergman than Megan Fox? Perhaps. Psychological impetus aside, this infatuation wasn’t always easy to feed.
No, I’m not that girl that goes around all day everyday wearing cat-eye eyeliner, bright red lips, and victory rolls. Something about that getup is unappealing to me on a daily basis. I know what it is… My aesthetic laziness.
I went to high school at an all-girls Catholic school where makeup was forbidden and we wore uniforms daily. In the spring, we chose among three colors. That was the extent of my stylistic problem du jour for many years, and some comforting part of the routine wore off on me as I sprung into young adulthood/early-twentiesism. Design new outfits every single morning? Contour my cheekbones before 7:30 a.m.? Reapply lipstick every hour?
No, I’m a fan of a classic look–put-together and flattering, but I don’t think anyone could accuse me of trying too hard during the week. I prefer a basic outline on which I can easily and casually build. This brings me to my favorite thing right now:
Classic vintage femininity. The trendy buttoned-up collars make me sort of mentally itchy, and I can envision myself, ten years from now, looking back and saying, “What? Why?” The tie neck blouse, however, reeks of classic femininity, the kind you might see sitting on a desk with the blinds drawn, tapping her cigarette nervously, because she stole some Maltese falcon, or something. She’s strong, but she’s going to cash in on her heaving, yet unbearably light femininity as well as she can. Introduce this year’s uber-popular pinks and blushes, and you’ve got easy, reliable, and so perfectly delicate. Pair with a structured, yet stretchy pair of cigarette pants and neutral flats, and you’re good to go on the daily.
How I adore overt femininity right now! Does this make me a femininist?
Check out this charming light pink, neck tie blouse at Forever21 that’s oh-so-cheap it won’t matter if next season’s biggest trend is neo-androgyny and classic liberty spikes. For now, this is right at $25 with shipping. No excuses, you femininist you.
What’s your favorite thing to wear right now? Do you have a basic “uniform” on which you rely during the week?
